2008: The Best and Worst in Foreign Policy
Tuesday December 30, 2008
Wrapping up 2008, here are some foreign policy resources which recall this crazy, historic, totally unpredictable year:
- The Top 10 Stories You Missed in 2008. Foreign Policy magazine points out that with such a news-filled year, there was lots which probably escaped your attention in 2008. These stories include Russia's play for Africa, the new surge in Afghanistan, and the sale of American "sonic blasters" to China.
- Top 10 Worst Predictions of 2008. An Africa-American elected president? Collapse of Wall Street? Oil below $40 a barrel? I am inclined to give a pass to anyone who tried to make a prediction about 2008. But the folks at Foreign Policy magazine are holding the feet to the fire. The worst prognostications include Barack Obama failing to win a single Democratic primary, Bear Stearns is fine, and Kenya is a model of stability.
- Top 25 Censored Stories for 2008. Project Censored compiles this list every year. While I often disagree with how they define "censored," I fully agree that most of these stories should receive much more attention. They include the establishment of AFRICOM, broad limits on habeas corpus rights, and various developments in Mexico.
- Top Ten Humanitarian Crises of 2008. Doctors Without Borders puts Somalia, Burma, and Zimbabwe at the top of this list. (Hat tip to UN Dispatch.)
