Forty years ago the United States was extracting itself from the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon's secretary of state Henry A. Kissinger was one of the architects of that withdrawal.

Kissinger, one of the most recognizable of America's modern secretaries of state, was also one of its most polarizing. Read here for a brief bio of the man who served both Nixon and his successor, Gerald Ford.
