Kerry Takes Office On Same Day As Ankara Bombing

Secretary of State John Kerry took office on February 1, 2013, shortly after a suicide bomber attacked the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, killing himself and a guard. Read more about the transition day here.

In the wake of the September 11, 2012, Benghazi, Libya, consulate attack, the Ankara attack underscores one of Kerry's first state department tasks -- ensuring the safety of U.S. foreign service personnel.
