McCain and Obama on Trade

2008 Elections and U.S. Foreign Policy

By Keith Porter, About.com

About Guide to the U.S. Economy Kimberly Amadeo has created some great resources for exploring the trade and economic policies of Senators John McCain and Barack Obama (and former Republican candidate Ron Paul).

In a nutshell she writes:

Of the three 2008 Presidential Candidates, John McCain is the strongest advocate of free trade. He is against all subsidies and tariffs, and supports free trade agreements.

Barack Obama is moderately protectionistic, seeking to renegotiate NAFTA and other Free Trade Agreements (FTA's) to ensure higher standards of environmental and labor protection.

Ron Paul, although he says he is for free trade, is actually the most protectionistic. He would abolish all trade agreements, and U.S. membership in world organizations such as the WTO and the UN.

Of the three, McCain's trade policies would most stimulate the U.S. economy.
