Who Is He?: Newt Gingrich was born June 17, 1943, in Dauphin, Pennsylvania. He eventually settled in Georgia. He is a graduate of Emory University and Tulane University where he earned a Ph.D. in Modern European History. He taught history at West Georgia College before being elected to Congress from the 6th district of Georgia in 1978. He served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He is now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

International Experience: Former Speaker Gingrich is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on their Terrorism Task Force. In 2005 he served, along with Senator George Mitchell, as co-chair of the Task Force on the United Nations, a bi-partisan Congressional effort to reform the United Nations. Gingrich has written extensively on a number of foreign policy issues.

Foreign Policy Positions: Gingrich supports free trade and a strong military. He has worked for serious reform of the United Nations. He speaks often of the growing threat from anti-American forces abroad. Gingrich has called for stronger action on Darfur including a militarily enforced no-fly zone.
